According to Merriam-Webster, the word of 2023 is “authentic.” And unlike the dictionary’s last few choices, it’s plagued by contradictions. As Buzzfeed and other outlets made very clear, she was the down-to-earth embodiment of the “cool girl” persona first popularized by Gillian Flynn’s 2012 novel, “Gone Girl,” a riotous, happy-go-lucky sex symbol. Almost overnight, the “cool girl” aura she epitomized was recast. Online, our miniature social media platforms take cues from celebrities’ mega ones. Should we even post about our mental health on social media, if we wouldn’t be comfortable telling our boss about it in person?

CNN —A man on a Southwest Airlines flight opened an emergency exit door and climbed onto the plane’s wing Sunday while the aircraft was at a gate at New Orleans Louis Armstrong International Airport, authorities said. The Jefferson Parish Sheriff’s Office said it responded to a disturbance at the airport after a 38-year-old man opened the emergency exit door to access the wing and jump out. As soon as he pressed the record button, Webster said the passenger unlatched the lock to the emergency exit door and jumped out the window. When deputies made contact with the passenger on the tarmac, he appeared “incoherent and not fully aware of his surroundings,” the sheriff’s office said. Webster said the delay was about two hours and the flight arrived in Atlanta shortly before midnight.

CNN —After months of probing and multiple investigations, authorities in northwestern Oregon now believe the mysterious deaths of four young women are connected, the Multnomah County District Attorney’s Office announced Monday. “The last known area that Perry was known to frequent was downtown Portland … at the beginning of March,” the sheriff’s office said. The body of Bridget Leann (Ramsey) Webster was found on April 30 near Mill Creek, which is about 50 miles southwest of Portland, according to the Polk County Sheriff’s Office. “The last known area that Webster was known to frequent was the Portland metro area, particularly Portland, Oregon City, and Milwaukie,” the sheriff’s office said in a Facebook post. In Word Through The Times, we trace how one word or phrase has changed throughout the history of the newspaper. The word “pride” originally had a negative connotation, in which a person exhibiting pride had an “unduly high opinion of oneself,” according to the Webster’s New World College Dictionary. As a person who writes about honesty and deception, I felt a spark of hope Monday when I found out that Merriam-Webster had made “gaslighting” the official word of the year for 2022. We have to engage with issues like gaslighting, including all the ugliness of the ways it’s been done in the past and the ways it’s still happening today. Gaslighting, as Merriam-Webster defines it, is “the act or practice of grossly misleading someone especially for one’s own advantage.” Our friends at the dictionary choose every year’s word based solely on data: This year saw a 1,740% increase in lookups on Merriam-Webster’s site for the term gaslighting. So while gaslighting is very 2022, it also could have been the word of the year many times before now — indeed, in nearly every period of American history. If we all did this, maybe the word of the year for 2023 would be self-awareness.
